King Mohammed VI received this Friday, at the Royal Palace in Fez, Mr.Aziz Akhannouch, president of the National Rally of Independents (RNI), whom the Sovereign appointed as new Head of government and entrusted with forming a new cabinet, said a press release issued by the Royal Household, Protocol and Chancellery.
According to the Moroccan Constitution, the Head of Govt. is chosen by the Monarch from the party that won the most seats in parliament, who will then form a cabinet and submit it for the Monarch’s approval.
The National Rally of Independents (RNI) is the biggest winner of the parliamentary, regional, and local elections held September8 in Morocco. It gained 102 of the 395-seat parliament, advancing the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM) which won 87,while the Istiqlal Party obtained 81 seats.
The socialist USFP grabbed 34 seats, MP 28 seats, the PPS 22 seats, and the UC 18.
The PJD, which headed the government coalition for a decade, suffered a major defeat, taking only 13 seats against 125 seats in the outgoing Parliament.
