More than 140 people died in northern Nigeria after a fuel tanker overturned and exploded while a crowd was collecting spilled gasoline, according to officials on Wednesday, October 16. The explosion occurred in Majiya, Jigawa State, when the tanker swerved to avoid another truck. Despite police efforts to disperse the crowd, people continued to gather around the vehicle, leading to the deadly blast.
Witnesses described the scene as a “horror,” with people on fire running and screaming for help. Over 140 victims have been buried, with many badly burned beyond recognition, and more than 140 others were injured and taken to hospitals.
Nigeria, facing severe economic challenges, has seen increased hardship following the removal of fuel subsidies, driving up costs and exacerbating public discontent.
