Sudan files formal complaint against Chad with African Union

Sudan announced that it had lodged a formal complaint against Chad with the African Commission on Human and People’ Rights, headquartered in Banjul, Gambia.

According to a statement on the Government spokesperson’s official page, Sudan accuses Chad of supporting the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who are allegedly committing severe human rights abuses in Sudan, including killings, rapes, forced displacement, war crimes, and crimes against humanity.

The complaint, filed on November 1 by a legal committee appointed by Sudan’s sovereign council, specifically targets the Chadian government. Sudan claims that Chad has interfered in its internal affairs by aiding RSF paramilitaries, who have been in conflict with the Sudanese army for over 18 months. The Sudanese Ministry of Justice stated that Chad has played “a key role in the crimes committed by the rebel militia” and claims to have concrete evidence of Chad’s involvement.

Chad quickly responded, reiterating that it has no involvement in Sudan’s internal affairs except as a neutral mediator for peace. Previously, on October 29, Sudan’s UN representative accused Chad of sending a convoy of “humanitarian aid” trucks—allegedly protected by the RSF—that were actually transporting sophisticated weapons. Chad has consistently denied all allegations from Sudan, maintaining that its role is solely to support peace efforts.
