Dozens Killed in Chad Communal Violence After Water Dispute in Wadi-Fira

At least 42 people have been killed and 10 others injured following violent clashes in the village of Igote in Wadi-Fira Province, according to the Chadian Press and Publishing Agency on Sunday, April 26.

The unrest, which occurred on Saturday, was triggered by a dispute between two individuals over access to a water point before escalating into broader inter-communal fighting. Limane Mahamat led a government delegation to the affected area, confirming the death toll and expressing condolences to the bereaved families. He added that the injured had been evacuated for medical treatment and that the situation was now under control.

Communal violence linked to resource competition, particularly land and water access, remains a recurring challenge in Chad, often flaring into deadly localised conflicts.
