At least 29 people were killed in an overnight attack on Sunday, April 26 in Guyaku village, located in the Gombi Local Government Area of Adamawa State, authorities confirmed on Monday.
The assault was claimed by Islamic State, marking another escalation in Nigeria’s prolonged security crisis. Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri condemned the attack as “tragic and unacceptable” during a visit to the affected community on Monday, April 27, 2026.
The incident underscores the persistent insurgency in northern Nigeria, where extremist groups—including Islamic State West Africa Province—continue to operate.
The violence coincided with a separate attack in Kogi State, where gunmen abducted 23 pupils from an orphanage in Lokoja on the same day. Authorities later confirmed that 15 had been rescued, with efforts ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims.
Nigeria’s security landscape remains strained by insurgency, kidnappings and organised criminality, with schools increasingly targeted as high-impact leverage points by armed groups.
