Abiy Ahmed Calls for Urgent UN Reforms to Reflect Changing Global Order

Abiy Ahmed has called for urgent reforms to multilateral institutions, warning that their legitimacy depends on their ability to respond effectively to a rapidly changing global landscape.

Speaking at the National Palace during events marking the 80th anniversary of the United Nations yesterday, May 13, the Ethiopian Prime Minister said a widening gap between global commitments and implementation was undermining the founding ideals of justice, human dignity and social progress.

Abiy reflected on Ethiopia’s historical experience with the collapse of the League of Nations system, saying it highlighted the weaknesses of collective security while reinforcing the importance of international cooperation.

He stressed that today’s world, marked by conflict, climate challenges and rapid technological change, requires a United Nations that is more representative and better aligned with contemporary realities. He particularly advocated stronger African representation in global decision-making structures to improve fairness and institutional credibility.

The Prime Minister also urged greater international action on peace and security, climate change and technological transformation, while commending António Guterres and Amina Mohammed for their engagement with Africa and commitment to multilateral dialogue.

He concluded by reaffirming Ethiopia’s commitment to an inclusive and effective multilateral system, describing cooperation as the surest path to global peace and shared progress.
