Mali: Women politicians, civil society demand release of Soumaïla Cissé

A collective of women politicians and civil society associations organized a sit-in in Bamako on Thursday morning to demand the release of opposition leader Soumaïla Cissé.

The opposition leader was kidnapped on March 25 during the legislative elections campaign in his fiefdom in Niafunké, in the Timbuktu region. He has been held by a jihadist group for more than two months.

Diallo M’Bodji Sène, spokesperson for the Women’s Collective of Mali for the liberation of Soumaila Cissé, expressed her frustration at the kidnapping of the opposition leader. “Soumaila is a father, a son for some, a brother for others or a friend for many. Seeing him disappear for more than 70 days without any news makes us uncomfortable,” she said.
