Sahara: Dakar hails historic UNSC resolution recognizing autonomy plan under Moroccan sovereignty

Senegal has hailed the adoption by the UN Security Council of resolution 2797 recognizing the Moroccan autonomy plan under the Kingdom’s sovereignty as the only basis for reaching a political solution to the Sahara conflict.

The supportive stand comes in the joint statement released following the meeting held Monday in Rabat between Moroccan Foreign minister Nasser Bourita and Senegalese peer Cheikh Niang.

The Senegalese top diplomat has reaffirmed his country’s steadfast support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire national territory, including the Sahara region. He has also renewed Senegal’s support for the Moroccan autonomy plan described as the only credible, serious and realistic solution to resolving this five-decade long regional conflict.

Bourita thanked the Senegalese minister for Dakar’s firm support for Morocco’s territorial integrity and sovereignty over its entire Saharan territory.

The two ministers agreed to bolster Moroccan-Senegalese strategic partnership based on solidarity, mutual trust, and shared development. They also pledged to strengthen cooperation in human development, trade, investment, transport, tourism, consular affairs, agriculture, health, vocational training, fisheries, energy, and infrastructure.

To this end, they agreed to convene soon the 15th session of the Moroccan-Senegalese joint high commission to discuss priority projects. The joint Consular Commission will also hold a meeting to improve mobility and protection of Moroccan and Senegalese communities living in either country.

In 2026, Morocco and Senegal will hold joint economic days in Dakar to strengthen further economic partnership, investment, and dialogue between private sectors.

Talks between the two officials showed convergence of views between Rabat and Dakar on major regional and international issues. They welcomed the shared vision of King Mohammed VI and President Bassirou Diomaye Faye for peace, stability, and development of the continent, as well as their commitment to moderate Islam.

Regarding the Atlantic African States Process, Bourita and Niang stressed the need to strengthen regional coordination to transform the African Atlantic space into an area of stability and co-development. They also talked about the African Atlantic Gas Pipeline project, linking Nigeria to Morocco, describing it is a powerful symbol of South-South operation, with Senegal playing a key role in the first phase linking its territory to Mauritania.

The two diplomats also reaffirmed their commitment to continue consultations on the royal initiative offering Sahel countries Atlantic Sea access within the frame of an inclusive and mutually beneficial approach.
