South Africa recalls specific Nestlé NAN infant formula over safety concerns

South Africa’s Department of Health has urged parents and caregivers to immediately stop using a specific batch of Nestlé NAN Special Pro HA Infant Formula (0–12 months) following a recall issued in line with a National Consumer Commission notice. The affected product carries batch number 51660742F3 with a best-before date of 15 December 2026 and has been on the market since September 2025.

According to the department, the recall follows the identification of a potential presence of cereulide, a toxin produced by Bacillus cereus, posing a food safety risk. The contamination was traced to a manufacturing plant in Germany that supplies several countries, including South Africa. Authorities have confirmed that only this single batch was supplied to South Africa and no other products are affected.

The department said it is working closely with Nestlé, the National Consumer Commission and other stakeholders to ensure appropriate measures are taken under strict food safety protocols. No illnesses linked to the product have been confirmed, but parents and caregivers have been advised to watch for symptoms such as persistent vomiting, diarrhoea or unusual lethargy, and to consult healthcare providers if concerned.

Consumers in possession of the affected product have been advised to return it to the point of purchase for a full refund. The department reiterated its commitment to promoting breastfeeding, recommending exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months, and assured the public that there is no need for panic, adding that updates will be provided as the recall process continues.
