Former Super Eagles and LOSC Lille striker, Peter Osaze Odemwingie, is working to make golf a mainstream sport in Nigeria.
The 43-year-old, who scored 61 Premier League goals during his career with Stoke City, West Bromwich Albion, and Cardiff City, has transitioned into golf since retiring. Last year, he became a certified professional golfer.
Odemwingie is passionate about increasing Nigeria’s presence in international golf and hopes his involvement in the sport will inspire younger generations. He dreams of seeing the Nigerian flag at elite golf tournaments, something currently absent from major tours.
He believes that while golf is less accessible in poorer countries, the sport’s popularity is growing, and with the right opportunities, Nigerians can thrive.
“My goal is to see more kids getting into golf. If they get the chance to try it, many will fall in love with it, just like I did”, Odemwingie said in an interview with BBC Africa.
He also hopes to encourage Nigerian state governments to invest in golf, promoting tourism and offering young talent scholarships. Odemwingie envisions a future where Nigeria is represented at the European and PGA Tours and ultimately in the Olympics, with the dream of winning a gold medal.
“If I can’t play on the tour, I’ll be part of a team that does. My dream is to introduce golf to a new generation in Nigeria, and hopefully, lead them to the Olympics,
