Nigeria: NFF President Gusau Confirms Confidence in Super Eagles Coach Chelle Amid Transfer Rumours

Ibrahim Gusau, President of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), has reaffirmed full confidence in Super Eagles Head Coach Eric Chelle, dismissing speculation linking him to external offers. Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Wednesday in Abuja, Gusau emphasised that Chelle remains
under contract and is committed to Nigeria’s football development.

“We have a binding contract with Eric and we expect full respect for that agreement. Stability is crucial for our progress. Chelle’s priority is building a competitive squad capable of success in major tournaments,” Gusau said.

He dismissed claims that financial incentives elsewhere could lure the coach away, highlighting that achievement, legacy, and the right environment are key for any serious coach. “Chelle strongly believes in the Super Eagles’ potential to dominate African football and compete globally. He is convinced he can
accomplish his professional ambitions with Nigeria,” he added.

Gusau credited Chelle’s leadership for the Super Eagles’ improved tactical discipline and attacking intensity at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, where the team finished as the tournament’s highest-scoring side and remained unbeaten in regulation time, losing only on penalties. He also acknowledged the
Federal Government’s support via the National Sports Commission, underlining that institutional collaboration has strengthened the team’s structure.

Looking ahead, Gusau assured Nigerians that young talents would be progressively integrated into the squad in upcoming international windows, with the March fixtures providing fresh opportunities. “This is just the beginning. Nigerians should expect greater performances from the Super Eagles,” he concluded.
