Ethiopia Targets Record $10 Billion Export Earnings as Industrial Growth Accelerates

Abiy Ahmed has announced that Ethiopia is on course to achieve 10 billion US dollars in export revenue this fiscal year, a milestone that would mark a historic high for the country.

Speaking on May 3, 2026, at the opening of the 4th Made in Ethiopia Expo in Addis Ababa, the Prime Minister attributed the projected growth to rapid industrial expansion and the strengthening of domestic manufacturing under the “Made in Ethiopia” initiative.

He noted that export earnings have surged significantly from under 3 billion dollars three years ago, supported by a rise in manufacturing growth from 4.7% to 10.7%. The government also reported producing 14.5 billion dollars’ worth of import-substitute goods over the past four years, alongside the revival of nearly 1,000 previously closed industries.

According to Abiy Ahmed, the country’s broader economic strategy focuses on reducing import dependence, boosting exports, and expanding African market access. He further highlighted the attraction of thousands of new investors and the identification of dozens of products for local production.

The Prime Minister added that Ethiopia’s economy is currently growing at over 10%, driven by gains across agriculture, mining, manufacturing, tourism and technology, while stressing the long-term goal of achieving full industrial self-reliance, including domestic production of key industrial machinery.
