Unidentified armed men Wednesday gunned down in Benghazi, Mahmoud Al-Werfalli, head of Al-Saiqa Force, a brigade loyal to rebel and warlord Khalifa Haftar
The 42-year-old military senior leader was very popular in Eastern Libya and a trusted Haftar loyalist.
The international Criminal Court, ICC, sought two times his arrest in 2017 and 2018 for alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes including the killing of 33 people.
A video that emerged on social media in 2018, showed Werfalli executing ten people outside the Bayt al-Ridwan Mosque in Benghazi without trial.
Haftar promised to cooperate with the Hague-based court but promoted his protégé to the rank of lieutenant-colonel in July 2019.
The European Union and the US Treasury backlisted Werfalli for human rights violations in Libya.
